Ring

Very eerie movie. Very, very eerie. My terror was assuaged somewhat by having read the manga and the book (and Nik and me have been parodying it to high heaven afterwards) but it was still very eerie. Sadako is FUCKING SCARY. Sorry, but she is. And what is this with Japanese girls being pushed into wells? And then their fingernails being torn off as they try and climb out? I'm tired of it!
*has brief vision of Ring remake with Hirono Shimizu of Battle Royale as Sadako. Problem is, her hair's too short...*
Ryuji is not as cute as he is in the manga, but he's still huggable. (Book!Ryuji is a strange man, to complete the comparison).
Nik and I are still parodying it to high heaven and Dad has noticed a flaw in Sadako's Evil Plan - surely if you watched the tape, you could show it to someone else, and then they could show it to you, and you could show it to them, and so on ad infinitum? Because Reiko watches the tape after she's shown it to Ryuji and been uncursed, and remains uncursed... presumably... which is a shame because it's a brilliant premise.
Anyway, I'm done now.
And I'd just got over seeing visions of Sadako lurking in the dark by my wardrobe...
Note: Just as I was about to post this, the Update Journal button moved. I howled and clung onto Nik. Who sneered.

I've never heard anything about Japanese girls clawing their way out of pushed-into-wells with all their fingernail fall-offy doom...sounds creepy, though, very very creepy...

SCARY MOVY BUTTONS OF MOVY DOOM!!!!1121 WHARRGHHGHGHGH (sorry that I'm being an idiot. I'm hyper.)

I'm glad that you watched it. I own the novel and the US remake. Still haven't seen the original version, though.

Now, with the "flaw", it's not really a flaw. Once you show the video tape to someone else, the curse is lifted from you. So it would be up to the other person to show it to someone. Since you already don't have the curse on you, it wouldn't affect you AND that person would still be cursed.

It makes sense and doesn't make sense. Perhaps a plot hole?

But the remake was really good and the sequel was good but not as good.

Hm... I've not actually read or seen it, but it's supposed to be good. I've read Battle Royale though :)

And beware the scary moving buttons... :o

I wuoldn't mind seeing The Ring - but are there two different movie versions or something? It's just that I was sure the girl in the tape's name was Samara, but a lot of people refer to her as Sadako...

And yes, I got a big fright when I last updated as the Update button shunted itself about. I laughed myself silly later when I realised that I'd been frightened of a moving button. ^_^
Damn LiveJournal; they are plotting against our sanity.

Oh, right; I'll see if I can get the Japanese version, then - can you just get it from any old DVD shop or is it a case of buying over the Internet?

I never saw the 'Processing Whining' sign, no! ::laughs helplessly:: I'd love to have seen that, though, if just to tell everyone that even my computer thinks I'm a whiner. OK, so it wouldn't be my computer, but you know what I mean. ^_^

Right, my local HMV has a World Cinema section; I'll go see what I can dig up next time I'm there.

Yes, it does - ah, LJ, you are a system after my own heart. XD

From what I've heard, both version are dinstinctly different. Sure, you have the same premise, but the Japanese version is much more creepy. The American remake is creepy, but it's much more laid back with the scares...it's seems like a gothic ghost story. The atmosphere is tense and I get goosebumps, even though there is nothing scary going on. Yeah, and Sadako is the real name of the ghost (in the Japanese version) and Samara is the name of the ghost in the US remake.

Oh yeah, and it was Dreamworks SKG who did the remake. ^_^

Yeah, there's a feeling of dread in every scene--I mean, the US remake isn't really all that scary, but it's creepy. The atmosphere is just right, you know? I mean, for the type of story that it is. And when everything builds up for the finale, you feel nothing but terror and sadness at the same time.

^_^ I love it!

Oh, right - good to know, thanks! :D
