[Notes/Summary] A visit to A&E prompts Yutaka to state an embarrassing truth to Shinji... Crossposted to
12dayschristmas. Feedback welcome as always!
The A&E waiting room is surprisingly quiet. Yutaka always figured such a place'd be full of screaming children with their heads stuck in saucepans, and hysterical girls who'd accidentally chopped a finger off with a kitchen knife, and... like, drunks and people cursing everywhere. But it's not... there's a quietly snivelling kid with his arm in a makeshift sling, a guy in a suit with a bloodstained tea towel wrapped round his hand... and then there's him, wearing only one shoe and with a shirt Shinji said he was just waiting for a chance to get rid of tied round his bare foot. The shirt is smeared with patches of red. Still, Yutaka doesn't feel like he's gonna faint any more. That's gotta be good.
Next to him, Shinji sighs, stretches out his legs, and stares up at the pale sunlight creeping across the ceiling.
"Thanks for coming with me," Yutaka says at last.
Shinji shakes his head. "What was I gonna do, leave you to bleed to death in my living room?"
"I'm sorry. Really. I didn't know... I didn't realise the glass was so thin."
"It was a coffee table, Yutaka." But Shinji's smiling as he says it. "This means it was designed to hold cups of coffee. And other hot beverages. Possibly a plate of cakes. Maybe a teapot. You, despite being a midget, weigh quite a bit more than any of these objects."
"Yeah, I sort of noticed." Yutaka sighs and gazes down at his feet again.
"Is it hurting still?"
"Uh-huh."
"If the whole midget thing was getting to you, you should have talked about it. You know, expressed your feelings in a constructive way. Or at least used the sofa to get some height instead."
"Yeah, yeah... seriously, I am sorry. Is your mum -"
"Nah, she'll be cool."
"What about all the blood?" Yutaka swallows. "I mean, the carpet was kind of -"
"I said, she'll be cool about it. I'll tell her we were watching the Program like good little patriots and got carried away, how about that?" Shinji puts his hands behind his head - Yutaka recognises his pose as the same one he adopts in classes that don't interest him. "Hey... you can't say we didn't finish the holidays off in style, that's for sure."
"Oh, man!" Yutaka sits up as he remembers (up until now he'd been able to forget because hanging with Shinji was just as it had always been). "I'm gonna be limping. I'll go into a new class tomorrow and then I'll be That Lame Guy for the rest of high school. That Lame Short Guy."
Shinji's laughing now. "Well... you might not."
"I might not?"
"You might grow a bit."
"It's all right for you, you're staying right where you are." Yutaka tries to make it sound casual, like just another stage in the mock-arguing, but he hears his voice turn sour. Jealous? C'mon, that's just stupid. Besides, even if Shinji were moving schools it wouldn't be the same. People will like Shinji wherever he goes. It wouldn't be the same 'less we were moving schools together. He's really been trying not to think about that, because it's a real downer counting out all the days you have left with someone and if he thinks about moving together he starts wanting it, wanting it real bad and who wants to sit around wanting what they won't get?
"Chill." Maybe Shinji noticed the sour tone. "I get to remember you just this way..."
Yutaka wants to say hey, we can still meet up, it's not like this is it, but he has a horrible feeling that maybe it sorta is. Like, Shinji's a great guy, and Yutaka'd do anything for him (not that Shinji'll ever know that) but... he's got loads of people, and all I've got is him.
He's never actually spelt it out like that before. Wishes he hadn't, because now he's feeling even worse than he already was.
A nurse comes out, calls out a name and the snivelling kid and his mum get up and are escorted away. Shinji's still staring up at the ceiling, eyes half-closed, humming something - probably some jazz tune - under his breath. Yutaka glances at him, trying not to make it obvious. I get to remember you just this way. He doesn't want memories, he wants -
He's never spelt that out. Well. He's never spelt it out when he's more than half-awake. But everyone knows dreams don't mean anything, right?
"Don't get embarrassed about it."
Yutaka jumps, nearly falling off his chair. "A - about what?"
"About damaging yourself again. I'm kinda used to your accident-prone ways."
"Oh... uh... sure." Damn, why is he blushing? What the heck is the point in that? "No, it's just... uh... it's just..." Really hot in here. Say it's really hot and then make a joke, c'mon, or... or talk about, about jazz or - or girls or something, or about what his mum's gonna say when she sees the bloody handprints on the sofa -
Shinji looks round at him, one eyebrow raised. "Are you trying to say something? Cos I've heard words can really help when it comes to conveying information."
Oh, shit! Yutaka stares back, feeling his mouth stuck half-open, a bunch of random sentences trembling on his tongue. Funnily enough, it's not lack of ideas that stops him from lying, or even lack of sense. It's remembering how whenever Shinji has someone he likes he just goes over and tells them and they nearly always say yes.
"Yeah... yeah, I am. I, uh, I guess you didn't know I would, uh... if it wasn't totally obvious that you... I mean, I know... I mean... actually I think you're really awesome and I wasn't gonna say anything but you asked so yeah, I'm trying to say I'd ask you out. If I was a girl. Or you were. And if we weren't like moving schools and moving on and all that crap. But we're are, and we're not girls, so I won't. Anyway, uh... did you see the repeat of Tonight, At The Same Place last night? Man, that show'd be so much better with some zombies..."
For a moment Shinji doesn't move. He continues gazing at Yutaka, his mouth set in the half-grin it had been just before he'd received what Yutaka figures has to be the worst declaration of love ever.
"I... didn't think you were going to say that," he says at last, carefully.
"No. I... uh... I didn't think I was either." Yutaka can't look at him now. He stares back down at his bloodstained foot. He can just see his toes sticking out from under the shirt.
"I didn't know," Shinji says. He sits up, and now he's glancing at his feet too. Only when he does it, it doesn't look like he's embarrassed, it just makes him look relaxed. "I... um... yeah. Didn't see that one coming at all. I don't suppose it's a joke? No, no, I didn't think it was, you looked pretty convincing. Look -"
And the nurse calls out, "Yutaka Seto!"
Typical. But Yutaka can't say he's surprised. He ran out of time ages ago, really. Maybe it's better, maybe he doesn't want to have to see whether Shinji will let himself matter to anyone.
He struggles to his feet, leaving red smears on the shiny floor. Shinji gets up as well, helps Yutaka to stand. His hand is warm, and shaking slightly.
"Yutaka -" he begins.
"Hey, never mind. C'mon, I gotta focus on staying upright." Yutaka tries to sound chirpy, and almost manages it.
Shinji smiles, and says, "Yeah," and if Yutaka didn't know that it was dumb, he could've sworn the smile was almost a sad one.
Today I received a necklace and a scarf from my godmother and DEATH NOTE VOLUME 12, TWO HOME-MADE DN POSTERS AND A PENGUIN OF DEATH SOAP FROM
lycoris ASKSSHDASDHGAHSGAGH. This now means when I go back to Oxford I can have Sam Tyler, L, Raito, Matsuda, Shinji AND KANEDA ON MY WALL AND IT WILL BE AWESOME :D
I really enjoyed the Doctor Who Christmas special last night and teared up a little at parts of it. Plus the end of it reminded me of Akira Book 6 and David Tennant always looks good in a tux (ssdashjdhasjshJ? Yes, probably ^^) So it was good.
