Universities...and all that jazz
Apr. 24th, 2003 08:12 pmWent up to Cambridge Uni today to walk around, take in its atmosphere, try and make a decision about what subject to do, and buy T-shirts with weird slogans on ^_^ My T-shirt was 'I'm not tense - I'm just terribly terribly alert' - the first slogan I've seen that actually feels like it was written for me!
Anyway, Cambridge is really nice and I got good vibes off it (I am not psychic - but some places I like, and some places I find terrifying and panic something awful will happen in them. Funnily enough, the awful places always seem to be places where we're staying on holiday. None of my "premonitions" have ever been proved right.) But the problem is, if I wanted to do maths...well, there's a large ton of flaws.
1) Didn't take double maths A-Level. Well, how was I supposed to know I should? When I was choosing my AS's, I didn't know anything about Oxbridge applications OR that I actually quite like maths. So when they say, 'hey, would you like to do twice as much maths as normal?' guess what I say?
2) Didn't take the mechanics options this year. Well, that's because I hate, loathe and despise mechanics. Mechanics is not maths. Mechanics is physics by another name with more numbers in it. I can do almost anything with simple pure maths questions, but put in a scenario (dropping bricks off towers, drilling holes, etc) and I go to pieces.
3) They don't really like gap year students. Only one of the colleges encourages gap year students, a few others 'if you do something worthwhile and interesting' (eeek, I don't think working at Waitrose for a year counts as that) and the others discourage. D'oh!
So I don't think my chances are really very high...
But this has at least kick-started me into thinking about the Dreaded University Question again. I plan to actually (gasp) do research when I go back to school.
In other news, lycoris's evil censorship crisis prompted me to investigate the occurences of the f-word in my own fics - partly as a precaution, but partly because I was sort of curious! The fic with the most uses of it is Schoolfic, which I haven't posted yet (must think of a title for that, sigh - why are titles so difficult?) but I could probably cut some of those. I didn't realise how foul-mouthed I'd become in that fic, but everyone curses like...well, like juvenile delinquents. Which is what they are. *glares* FF.NET IS STIFLING MY REALISM AND CREATIVITY!
The fic with the most uses of it in a sexual context is (surprise, surprise) Out Of The Ashes. *whistles innocently* What, there's nothing I can do about those!
Well, I probably could fix them if I chose, but...I resent it. For that. SF it probably is excessive and should be moderated, but OotA *needs* those rude words! They mean something dammit!
PS I love these mood icons ^__^
