[Title] Dance Hall Blues
[Fandom] Jet Set Radio Future
[Rating] G
[Notes/Summary] Beat bemoans his gangmates' fondness for stupid dancing.
The jive classes, Beat had decided, really were all Rhyth's fault.
Rhyth's fault, and that damn perky Oldies but Goodies song, a piece of music second only to Birthday Cake in its ability to piss him off. The two of them had combined to produce an atmosphere so cheesy that sometimes Beat wasn't sure he still wanted to be in this gang.
The GGs being who they were, and the radio playing the role it did in their lives, people were always dancing. If you were standing up, you grooved a little to feel the rhythm. Garam and Corn sometimes did a little break-dancing. If you wanted to make out with a girl, ten to one you'd do it while moving slowly to music with your arms round her waist.
But Rhyth had taken it too far. As she usually did, in Beat's opinion. (Well, he often took things too far as well, but he did it in a snarky way. She just did it in an annoying way.) She'd been dancing, and that song had turned up on the airwaves, and she'd begun to hand-jive. Like, doing that moving-one-hand-over-the-other thing. Clapping. Twirling her fingers in the air. The sort of stuff you saw in Grease (well, Beat had only watched that movie once and then under duress, but you know.)
"Nice moves," Corn had called out, and then, as the song persisted, Yoyo had come to dance next to Rhyth, copying her. Beat, who had been lounging on the sofa, hadn't taken much notice until suddenly Rhyth had grabbed Yoyo's hand and started doing all these fancy swirly moves and then stopped, started trying to explain to a blushing Yoyo what he should do.
And since then things had gone to hell in a handbasket. Because Corn liked learning new things, full stop, and so he'd been all Oh, can you teach me, that's awesome! And then Gum had stepped in as a partner for him because Rhyth was still dragging Yoyo behind her. And then the next thing Beat knew, Combo and Garam were crowding round and saying Corn looked like he had two left feet and they thought they could do better -
And now Beat was in a gang that held jive dance classes. Every other freakin' evening. It hurt his soul.
He'd never done it, of course. He didn't want to look like a twat. It was one step up from ballroom dancing, in his opinion. Actually, he suspected it was a type of ballroom dancing. He didn't do regimented dancing. He did his own thing. He always had.
Still, the rest of the gang accepted his lack of interest. Rhyth didn't even pout and plead with him to participate.
Not that he'd expected her to.
Still, it could be worse. No one had yet managed to jive successfully to Birthday Cake. If they pulled that off, he might really have to think about going solo.

Date: 2009-03-02 03:49 pm (UTC)It's always refreshing to see you tackle JSRF fic, because the characters have a drastically different personality base than JGR. After a while you just get too used to what JGR had to offer. Beat being a crank-ass and Rhyth being that upbeat about everything ("I like everything about Tokyo...even the things I hate.") are a nice, new look on the characters. (Though I'm not very fond of Yoyo-as-a-shy-kinda-kid kid. But you know that already. XD)
So, great job! And I will catch up on the one's I've missed, I promise!

Date: 2009-03-03 08:34 pm (UTC)That must be really frustrating, especially as you have to spend so much time with him! I'm sorry :S
It is fun writing JSRF fic, especially now I'm playing the game (although when I'm playing, I still keep miscalling Corn and Rhyth as Tab and Mew. Mainly when I'm shouting at them not to fall off things XD) Like you say, it's nice having different places and people to work from!
Aw, any reviews appreciated but I know it's a lot of fic ^^
