[Notes/Summary] Set early on in S1. Alex has always known the mind leaves clues.

The mind leaves clues. Alex has always known this; her choice of career only underlined it. The mind manifests behaviours or beliefs or unconscious signs and once you know that, you can decode the message. This has been her livelihood for years. She's good at it.

It is a lot harder to believe when -

No, it's a lot easier to believe when you're trapped -

No, experiencing, not trapped, because that implies no way out and there is a way out because the point is -

The point is that everything is a sign now. Just by being conscious in this world she's receiving a flood of data and the only barrier to understanding is that it's difficult to process so much. But the richness of it – how can she not pick out the underlying message? It should be screaming in her ears.

(She'd lived in London all her life and when she went away to university she was someone who couldn't understand people who found it too big or too fast. And then she came back after graduation and the lights and the noise and the size felt like they'd sweep her away and there was a constant pounding of music in the back of her mind even when she was in silence. And she was looking for her parents in the faces of passers-by.)

(See? The mind is ridiculously obvious about its messages.)

This flood of data is like those time-lapse films of London with lights growing and shrinking and the sky pulsing bright and dark but she relearnt London and she'll learn this, too.

(The messages seem to align themselves around Gene Hunt, like iron filings round a magnet. The biggest sign. The largest arrow. But god knows what he's pointing to, and she resents him muscling in on her psyche like this. She elects to ignore him, at least for now.)
