I need to talk about We Need To Talk About Kevin!!!! I know someone on my Flist read it. Who were you and what did you think? Comment or I'll shoot you down with a crossbow
It was me (and mum) and I thought it was amazing! Really harrowing - it took me ages to read because you couldn't stand more than...a dozen or so pages before you had to go away and do something else. I did wonder half-way through whether we were going to get anyone else's side of the story, there were things that I didn't guess and therefore came as a surprise and overall it was well structured and well worth reading, especially if you can wait until you're feeling cheerful!
I can say more as long as I know I'm not spoiling it for you. What did you think of it?
I thought it might have been you. Yay! I thought it was very well-written - a few unnecessary hundred-dollar words but very well-written - and really compelling, I couldn't put it down. I didn't get the final twist (lots of people on amazon did apparently - but I thought that after the eye thing... well.) I thought Kevin was a bit too evil. I mean, I didn't feel like I could blame Eva that much because Kevin came across as a messed-up kid from day one (I know Eva could have been biased but if we assume all the events actually happened it still doesn't paint Kevin in a good light). (Actually I do blame Franklin a bit. I wanted him to stop letting Kevin get away with everything and it's bad form to undermine your spouse in front of the kids.) I found it a very interesting read but I think it would have done more of what the blurb said it did (I think I had been a victim of hype) if Kevin hadn't been completely psychopathic all the time except for two occasions. The ending was touching, and I was moved at the time, but... I couldn't quite believe Kevin would be able to reform.
