I kind of know what you mean, in that there are some things where I don't like what's happening onscreen but I still want to watch cos I like the characters or the concept. But I reckon my tolerance for that is far lower than yours.
In Akira, there are fewer globs of brain (in fact, virtually no globs of brain at all). And less close-ups of death in general.
