On the second day of Christmas, my true love sent to me...
two breakups

[Title] Work-Life Balance
[Fandom] Battle Royale (manga)
[Rating] G
[Pairing] Yuka Nakagawa/Satomi Noda (I've just realised it could easily be a platonic break-up, but when I wrote it I was picturing them in a relationship)
[Word Count] 805
[Notes/Summary] *sigh* a year ago today, Yuka and Satomi were indulging in R-rated hijinks. Now things are not going so well; Yuka wants to have fun, but Satomi's more concerned about exams.
Yuka finally managed to catch up with Satomi in the library. She really should've looked there first, but she'd put it off, because when Satomi was in the library she was impossible to talk to; she always gave out this buzz of irritation that you'd dared come between her and the books.
Today was no exception. Satomi was sitting at the furthest-away table, leaning so far forward she looked as if she was sniffing the pages of her book. Yuka was tempted to creep up behind her, just to see her jump, but the place was filled with other Shiroiwa Junior High students all cramming like it'd save the world, and Yuka figured if she made Satomi shriek she might not get out of the building alive.
So she walked - too loudly, she could feel people glaring at her - over to Satomi's table, sat down opposite her, and whispered, "Hey."
Satomi slowly raised her head, squinted a little. "Oh. Yuka. Hi. Have - have you come to revise?"
"Um... not exactly. Just thought I'd, you know, say hi. I haven't seen you for days."
"Well, we do have exams," Satomi said, and did she roll her eyes, just a little? "I've been busy."
"Yeah, but you know, all work and no play makes -"
"Yes. I know," Satomi snapped, and stared back down at her book.
"Okay, okay." Yuka leant forward a little. This time Satomi didn't look up. "I'll go away for now. If you come round to mine sometime this week. My brother bought the DVD of Vultures Ate My Boyfriend home yesterday and I heard it's absolutely terrible, and I'll get popcorn. Sound good?"
Satomi didn't respond for a moment. When she did, her voice sounded very quiet and ever-so-slightly-fierce. "Yuka. You know I can't come out until exams are over."
"But that's not for three weeks!"
"I know that. What I don't know is why - why you don't seem to understand how important these exams are to me. Or - or to you! Don't you care about them at all?"
"Hey, I'm studying too, you know," Yuka said. "I'm just not being insane about it like you are." As soon as she said it she realised it was one of those jokes that had misfired, like disastrously, but before she could take it back Satomi had put her book down with a little slap on the table and snapped, "Oh - so I'm insane now? Thanks for the clarification."
"I'm just saying. You're working like crazy, y'know?"
"I want," Satomi hissed - not forgetting her library manners even now - "to go to Tokyo U. You know that. You know the grades they require. You know how much competition there is for places -"
"Yeah. I do. So you don't need to talk to me like I'm an idiot." Sometimes it seemed like Satomi forgot that while Yuka wasn't all As like her, she wasn't all Fs like - like Ryuhei or Hiroshi, either. She was Bs and the occasional C, like Shuuya and Chisato and Yukiko - perfectly nice, normal people who weren't dumb by any stretch of the imagination.
"Then you get why I can't see you right now! I don't understand why you keep pestering me!"
And now Satomi looked like she'd just realised her sentence had misfired too, but that didn't matter. Yuka wondered what would happen if she snatched the book out of Satomi's hands and threw it at her head. Probably you got banned from the library for life for that kind of stuff.
"Gee, I'm so sorry," she snapped. "You know what? I don't understand either. Maybe I should stop."
Satomi's mouth trembled, and for a moment she looked as if she wanted to take it back - go on, Yuka willed her, because she herself sort of wanted to take back what she'd just said too. Except - pestering? Like I need her? How dare she? For someone so smart, she's really stupid sometimes -
Then Satomi's face closed up, and she stared again at her book.
"Maybe you should," she said sharply. "I've got my future to think of."
That did it. Yuka got up and walked out because if she didn't, there really would be book-throwing. The anger powered her out of the building into the sunny day that suddenly didn't seem half as nice as it had twenty minutes ago. It was only then that she found that tears were sliding down her face.
[Title] Timewasting
[Fandom] Battle Royale (manga),
br_roleplay V7 canon
[Rating] PG for mention of sex
[Pairing] Shinji Mimura/Haruka Tanizawa
[Word Count] 926
[Notes/Summary] Haruka's character taken from
bway_junkie's portrayal of her. Shinji got tired of waiting for Haruka, and now she's found out what he did to pass the time.
Be sure your sins will find you out. Shinji had always figured he'd never bought into any of Haruka's trite little slogans, but this one was kinda sticking in his mind. Well, to be accurate, it popped into his head on the shiny sunny morning after, when he went into school expecting her to slap him and run off crying as soon as she laid eyes on him. But of course there was no way she could've found out that quickly, and his shower this morning had washed off any lingering traces of dusty floors or bar smoke or bit-on-the-side perfume.
But still it felt like Haruka's version of the world was just experiencing some kind of time delay - like a bad Internet signal - and any minute now -
The minute came three days later, after school, with the sun just beginning to sink and the air cool. She was waiting for him when he left after basketball practice and as soon as he saw her face he knew what this little discussion was gonna be about. Not cos she looked mad - she did - but she looked hurt too, like she didn't wanna be mad, she wanted to go home and cry but was holding on because - well, because she can't pass up the chance to lie about on the moral high ground, but he kind of knew that wasn't fair.
He felt his smile setting on his face, felt it turn just a little sharp. Haruka did guilt trips like no one else, right? He didn't know if that was true, actually, but right now it felt good to say it. It wasn't like he was bothered by shouting matches and accusations - not like Yutaka, who wilted if anyone criticised him - but they were... boring? Nah. Just... weird, and sort of pointless, watching someone freak out at you when you weren't bothered...
"Shinji," she began as he reached her, before he could kiss her, before he could even speak, "I heard something really bad about you and I - I have to know if it's true or not." Her voice was shaking, just a little, but her face was determined, and she only glanced away from him once or twice.
He put on the concerned boyfriend face and said, "Sure. What is it?" He wanted to make a joke, but why not make the last few seconds of the act a good one? A concerned boyfriend wouldn't kid around, because she was so upset.
Part of him actually cared that she was upset. That made him feel like he'd got sick from her or something.
"Yukie told me," she began, "that her best friend's friend heard a girl in their volleyball team talking about how she did it with Shinji Mimura from Shiroiwa Junior High. Four days ago." And even as she said it her voice was shaking - was she realising how dumb it sounded? And she told her that she'd said that, like, oh my God! He could probably bullshit this one, tell her it wasn't like he didn't have a reputation and someone could be shooting their mouth off as a joke. And then she'd buy it, and let him kiss her, and they'd walk home together hand in hand, and...
And then what?
It's gettin' old. Been old for a long time. She's not gonna let me get in there, so why am I wasting my time?
Or alternatively; he liked her, once, he thought she was a laugh. She doesn't deserve the bullshit.
He honestly didn't know which reason it was that made him say, "Yeah. It's true."
She went white, leaving her reddened eyes blazing in her face. "It's - true?"
He wondered how much she'd believed it, before, and felt almost regretful, for a second.
"Why?" she gasped out, and it was like he'd hit her, and now he thought Uncle wouldn't have been particularly impressed by this scene, and then he remembered how his one-night-stand had been nothing more than putting up a finger at Uncle and Haruka both. And he wondered why, if that was the case, both of them were making him feel like he'd had dirt kicked in his face. Shouldn't it be the other way round?
And he didn't know what to say to Haruka. The truth was either too convoluted or would sound shit. So all he did was shrug. "Guess I couldn't go the distance after all."
She should have been getting angry and threatening him with hellfire. Why was she just standing there with tears welling up and her mouth going all shaky? She should have been getting angry and storming off. He wanted her to, he didn't want her to stand there, crying, he didn't know how to feel about it.
So he took the initiative like he always did. Started to walk past her, and said as he did so, "Sorry it didn't work out." It sounded fake even to him. And then he was walking, fast as he can, and telling himself now life could get back to normal and everything had worked out the way he'd planned. And hey, he was believing it, too. He'd start feeling it soon enough.
