My journal is going to get more fic-heavy as I have a backlog. Sorry in advance.

Both of these written for and crossposted to [livejournal.com profile] 40fandoms.
[Title] No Day But Today
[Fandom] Saiyuki
[Rating] PG
[Notes/Summary] Cho Gonou reflects on living from day to day.

The wound across his stomach still aches if he breathes too hard, and he finds himself tired enough that it's hard even to drag himself from the table to the bed sometimes.

Behind him there is blood and screaming and if he thinks too much about that he wants to scream himself.

In front of him he doesn't know what there is. Far away, somebody killed a thousand youkai and an entire village. Eventually, they'll find him. He will never have a home to come back to and he can't see more than a day in front of him.

Right now, though, the sun still shines, and the coffee cup is warm in his hands, and Gojyo stubs out his cigarette and goes to grab the playing cards from the table. And it is almost possible to believe, here and now, that if he just joins together enough of these nows, they'll make up a real life.

[Title] Soulmates
[Fandom] Death Note/Torchwood
[Rating] PG-13 for language and mention of sex
[Pairing] Toshiko Sato/Teru Mikami
[Notes/Summary] College AU, of sorts, as I suspect the two of them were not in college in the same time and place. Toshiko muses on words and relationships.

The sun is setting; it scrawls itself across Toshiko's bedroom wall as if she's decided to break campus rules and indulge in some casual vandalism. She would like to lie in bed and watch the light - not because it's particularly pretty or interesting but because watching the sunset is what you're supposed to do when you've just...

"Made love" is probably wrong (can't be in love -). "Had sex" is technically correct, but makes this sound too casual, and too... fun. And she can't even think "fucked". She's frightened (stupidly) that he'll hear somehow, be appalled, and leave.

He's already out of her single bed (practical, it isn't as if it's comfortable being so squashed together) pulling on his clothes, his shadow bitten out of the sunset.

"You don't have to go," she says, and tries to smile sweetly, and in her head she chooses "fucked" after all, just because.

Mikami turns to look at her, straightens his glasses. She hates it when he stares at her like this, so... analytical. (She won't think of the fact that normally she prizes an analytical mind above all else.) If it wasn't for the memory of how different he looks at her when they - fuck - she would...

No, she wouldn't. He is her first boyfriend and - doesn't he understand her more than anyone else? Doesn't he?

"I have work to do," he says at last. He doesn't speak coldly, but more as if this is just a fact and he's sorry he can't do anything about it.

(She could guilt-trip him. It would be too easy. She doesn't understand how she knows, but she does, and she's disgusted for even considering such a possibility.)

(She'd have power.)

"It's seven p.m.," she says, deliberately keeping her voice light so that he knows she's not upset (and she isn't manipulating, she's just saying -) "We could go to a... a bar or something..." And then she hears how fake and silly she sounds and her smile feels stupid and she shakes it off. Why is she talking like this? She is sleeping with him (ah, a compromise) because he doesn't expect her - doesn't want her - to be vivacious or fake or silly or giggly or drunken and he likes her and her seriousness and focus. Even though he thinks a degree in computer science is cold and unworthy and doesn't involve half as much work as law.

(Why does she want to hurt him?)

"I'm not lazy, Sato." Never Toshiko. Never Teru, either.

"More reading to do?"

A shy smile. "You know there always is."

He came and talked to her that first time because he found her crying in the lobby at the end-of-freshers'-week party. He asked her if someone had hurt her. She had not explained that she was crying because she'd just realised how no one, ever, here, would be interested in her company and she would never be interested in their company and she'd drunk three glasses of too-cheap wine.

Sometimes she wishes she had explained.

(But then -)

When they make love she sees scars on his chest, blotchy marks like smeared fingerprints, and when she touches him he always tenses at first as if, even now, he assumes she's going to hurt him instead.

When they're going to sleep together she finds herself saying things like "I need you" (and sometimes she does, and sometimes she worries that she doesn't) and then he clutches her and his mouth cries for her skin and she wonders if maybe she does love him after all.

When they're not fucking he talks only of work and, sometimes, hesitatingly, of abstracts like ethics and justice. He stumbles when he does this, sounds awkward and young.

After they've had sex she wonders why having it with someone who understands, who is like her, doesn't make her feel any less lonely.

Wow. After reading Death Note, it's strange to see Mikami having a very close to human side inside him; you really pulled that off well, gave it a lot of impact, and I really felt bad for him and knowing where he'd eventually wind up. I dug Toshiko's ponderance over how to describe her sexings with Mikami, too - "fucking" is more carnal than the others, and it fits Mikami's style.
