(gee, thanks -_-;)

[Title] Getting Over It
[Fandom] Akira
[Rating] PG
[Notes/Summary] Kaneda's still a delinquent, but things feel different now.

"Don't get me wrong," Kaneda said, staring out across the valley of collapsed skyscapers. "I'm still not particularly keen on becoming a productive member of society. I mean... I don't even know how I'd do that. Do you have to believe the bullshit, or can you make like the whole thing's a big joke?"

"You're asking the wrong girl," Kei said gently, resting her arms on her knees and following his gaze. The sky was white gold.

"Huh. Right. And it's not like I'm going to ditch the wheels, hell no."

"But...?"

"I gave a damn about winning, back in the day," Kaneda said. "Now... hell, I'd just like to get fired up about something that didn't matter. Everything means something now, y'know? Everything's too... important."

Kei looked at him as if no, she didn't quite know, as if everything had always meant something to her, but then she put her hand over his, and, after a moment, he gripped it. He didn't want to say that perhaps it had always been like that for Tetsuo, perhaps that had been the whole problem. Even if that were the case, Kaneda would have said, up until now, that you just had to get over yourself if you took everything that seriously. Now he wished it was that easy.

[Title] Childish Beliefs
[Fandom] Death Note
[Rating] G
[Notes/Summary] And Matsuda's still a police officer, but things feel different here too.

Matsuda gets it. He knows that there wasn't ever any way Kira's world could have worked. Even if Raito had - had got away with it, killed him and Near and the others, it still wouldn't have worked. There would still be people being frightened. There would still be good people getting messed around. Because those things happened all the time Raito was killing people, it's just Matsuda didn't necessarily know it.

But now there are lots of people who are frightened, and lots of good people wasting their time trying to bring one small speck of niceness to the world and not even seeing how pointless it all is.

Matsuda goes to work and takes notes and tries to finish things on time and occasionally, when he feels he has to, offers a suggestion or an opinion on something and wants people to notice that he doesn't actually care one way or other. He wants them to ask what's wrong? so that he can explain and either they'll come up with a good solid argument that makes things look a bit better, or they'll argue and then they can have a massive row and perhaps then Matsuda will stop feeling so angry with everyone, all the time. At the very least, he wants them to know that he gets it now. Like a child wanting to mention loudly that he doesn't believe in Santa Claus, just so everyone sees how grown-up he is. Of course, what the child doesn't see is that even having to point that out marks him as childish. Real adults don't need to talk about it. So Matsuda stays quiet, because he gets that, too.
