Battle Royale with chocolate

I'm back home after an absolutely hideous train journey which I don't feel the need to recount - let's just say that at the cinema today there was an ad for Virgin trains and Nik went ballistic...
But anyway. We were at the cinema because we took my sister to see:
which was very good. More faithful to the book, and more interplay between the various characters than in the book. Also the songs were great! I loved them! And the Oompa-Loompas worked very well. Johnny Depp was scary, but not as irritating as I'd envisaged - although I'm still not sure I liked his portrayal that much. All the kids were very good except Charlie, who was a bit blah - but it's not his fault, playing the good guy is very hard. I especially loved the way they portrayed Mike and Violet. Zoe has developed a Verruca impression... not good. But basically, the film had a darker atmosphere... see my subject line. Oh, and Mr Bucket was disturbingly attractive.
I also realised I wrote down my thoughts on Ghost In The Shell ages ago and forgot to post them (I am an LJ addict, I admit it), so...
Very, very beautiful and eerie. I absolutely loved the animation and the cityscapes, and the eerie, sad sense of it all. The plot was interesting although I get the feeling that they crushed it all up to fit it into the film (I don't understand why they didn't make it longer, eighty minutes is not that much for a movie).
The stuff about false memories was interesting and I wish there'd been more of it.
Kusanagi is the love child of Kei from Akira and Kiriyama from Battle Royale ^_^
I haven't had many LJ comments recently actually. May be just holidays. But eh, this thing is a record for me and that's useful.
There was a very irritating article in the paper today in which loads of people wrote in to say what their definition of Britishness was. Cricket, queueing, fair play (ha ha) and tolerance featured highly. I think this is bollocks.
Britishness, for me, is:
Red Dwarf
The sun shining but not too brightly
Having been invaded by loads of people so that we are a huge cultural melting pot but don't notice
That's it.
I am definitely not a patriot.

Date: 2005-08-02 09:58 pm (UTC)And yes, the movie does not capture the essense of the series very well, but that's what the Second movie AND the 26 Episode series, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, is for. Which I also recommend. ^_- Highly recommend. Very much.
Plus the tv series makes literary references to JD Salinger, which makes it smart. ^_^

Date: 2005-08-04 09:41 am (UTC)I know you recommend them - I am keeping an eye out but we live in an anime desert here.
Have you read any of the manga?

Date: 2005-08-04 01:15 pm (UTC)Yes there is a second movie. It's in Japanese only which kind of upset me a little, because I found that the english voice work for the series was quite fantastic and fitting. Nevertheless, the movie was still awesome.
Anyway, as far as I know I believe that burned DVDs are region free, but I could find out. If that's the case, I actually don't mind burning a DVD and sending it over if I can make it region free. Just have to ask my dad...but we have a thousand DVD+Rs and RWs, so we're set. The whole entire series is on 7 DVDs unfortunately. 3-4 eps per DVD. Ripoff if you buy retail, eh?

Date: 2005-08-05 10:49 am (UTC)Well, I think the first one definitely had room for a sequel, so it's not surprising one exists. Do you know what it's called?
That's very nice of you, but check with your dad first. This region stuff makes me nervous.

Date: 2005-08-03 03:19 am (UTC)The movie was really deep. And I didn't get all of it.
Stand Alone Complex, however, is a VERY good series and I think it does the movie justice. I haven't seen the 2nd movie yet, so I don't know how that is. But according to what reviews are saying, it seems to be more of the same.
Which could be good or bad, depending on how one sees it. ^^

Date: 2005-08-04 09:43 am (UTC)Eh, I was just drooling over the art. I knew from what I'd read that there were some deep, deeeeeep parts to it, but I just liked the cityscape.

Date: 2005-08-05 08:20 pm (UTC)And I must say, first time it happened, I was surprised. Next shot of her, and I said to myself, "Hey, it's Japanese. They don't really care." Then the third shot, I thought it was pretty hot. Then after that, it was pretty much, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?"
I think she had to take the clothes off to activate the cloak but so many people on an anime message board disagreed. But then again, what DO forum people know? XD

Date: 2005-08-06 01:16 am (UTC)First time that I saw that little scene, I was like "W.O.W."
I've noticed that she doesn't have any nipples...but then again, she IS a cyborg, so maybe that's normal.
Forum people know nothing. All they know to do is get on my nerves with their stupid comments and theories. It's one thing if you say something but know it's not true, but it's another if you believe that you're theory is dead-on, even though it isn't correct.
I've ran into too many of them to even try to like the forums. I tend to not even go on them, in fear that I will just rant and rave and flame everything and anything that is stupid.

Date: 2005-08-03 04:26 am (UTC)As for the rest of the movie, having barely paid attention to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory when I first saw it, I didn't have too much to compare to. I really did enjoy the new one--Johnny Depp was just so awkward and closed off from humanity and he takes the character of Willy Wonka in a different direction than Gene Wilder did. (I love the fact that he wears purple latex gloves throughout the entire movie--it's almost like he's afraid of exposing his hands to the world and getting dirty.) And Violet's mom is the creepiest character by FAR. XD I think she was in Galaxy Quest, as that alien girl who falls in love with the technician guy.

*squish*
Guy: OOOOH! THAT'S NOT RIGHT!!!
And Charlie and the Chocolate Factory too.

Date: 2005-08-04 09:46 am (UTC)I hated the original movie, I found it really upsetting the way it diverged from the book. I don't know if I would have liked this one better as a kid, but I definitely did now.
I thought it was a very original way of looking at the character (and plausible - I mean, he's been shut up in a factory for years) although I think Roald Dahl may be revolving in his grave ^_^
And you're right about the gloves. And also the way that he finds the kids difficult to deal with - I could empathise with that, and it does make sense; he's been alone so long and he's so emotionally immature it's not surprising he isn't the best at handling them.
Violet and her mum were brilliant ^_^
I need to see GQ again, I've forgotten half of it!
